The archives objective is the collection and preservation of documents and other recorded sources from the district’s history to be used by administration, organisations and individuals alike. This is done to safeguard their interest and rights and to aid scientific and academic research. The archives jurisdiction spans all districts in Þingeyjar Counties.

Furthermore, we have documents from various associations, it is their legal responsibility to deliver their archives if they have received money from the municipalities or from the Icelandic state. We do not have any legal claims on private documents, i.e. letter-collections, diaries, manuscripts of literature and so on, but collect as much of such documents as possible for their historical value.
